Applying Optimization and the Analytic Hierarchy Process to Enhance Agricultural Preservation Strategies in the State of Delaware AgEcon
Messer, Kent D.; Allen, William L., III.
Using agricultural preservation priorities derived from an analytical hierarchy process by 23 conservation experts from 18 agencies in the state of Delaware, this research uses weighted benefit measures to evaluate the historical success of Delaware’s agricultural protection fund, which spent nearly $100 million in its first decade. This research demonstrates how these operation research techniques can be used in concert to address relevant conservation questions. Results suggest that the state’s sealed-bid-offer auction, which determines the yearly conservation selections, is superior to benefit-targeting approaches frequently employed by conservation organizations, but is inferior to the optimization technique of binary linear programming that could have...

Comparative analysis of different meat traceability systems using multiple criteria and a social network approach REA
NÄÄS,IRENILZA DE A.; MOLLO NETO,MARIO; VENDRAMETTO,ODUVALDO; CANUTO,SIMONE A..
The adoption of a proper traceability system is being incorporated into meat production practices as a method of gaining consumer confidence. The various partners operating in the chain of meat production can be considered a social network, and they have the common goal of generating a communication process that can ensure each characteristic of the product, including safety. This study aimed to select the most appropriate meat traceability system “from farm to fork” that could be applied to Brazilian beef and pork production for international trade. The research was done in three steps. The first used the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for selecting the best on-farm livestock traceability. In the second step, the actors in the meat production chain...

Information preferences for the evaluation of coastal development impacts on ecosystem services: A multi-criteria assessment in the Australian context ArchiMer
Marre, Jean-baptiste; Pascoe, Sean; Thebaud, Olivier; Jennings, Sarah; Boncoeur, Jean; Coglan, Louisa.
Ecosystem based management requires the integration of various types of assessment indicators. Understanding stakeholders' information preferences is important, in selecting those indicators that best support management and policy. Both the preferences of decision-makers and the general public may matter, in democratic participatory management institutions. This paper presents a multi-criteria analysis aimed at quantifying the relative importance to these groups of economic, ecological and socio-economic indicators usually considered when managing ecosystem services in a coastal development context. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied within two nationwide surveys in Australia, and preferences of both the general public and decision-makers for...

Multi-Criteria Analysis to Prioritize Energy Sources for Ambience in Poultry Production Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Collatto,DC; Mansilha,RB; Chiwiacowsky,LD; Lacerda,DP.
ABSTRACT This paper intends to outline a model of multi-criteria analysis to pinpoint the most suitable energy source for heating aviaries in poultry broiler production from the point of view of the farmer and under environmental logic. Therefore, the identification of criteria was enabled through an exploratory study in three poultry broiler production units located in the mountain region of Rio Grande do Sul. In order to identify the energy source, the Analytic Hierarchy Process was applied. The criteria determined and validated in the research contemplated the cost of energy source, leadtime, investment in equipment, energy efficiency, quality of life and environmental impacts. The result of applying the method revealed firewood as the most appropriate...

Planificacion multicriterio de explotaciones agrarias en areas tropicales protegidas. El caso de la zona protectora Guanare-Masparro (Venezuela) AgEcon
Flores, Jose; Gomez-Limon, Jose Antonio.

PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR LAND PRESERVATION: MEASURING RELATIVE PREFERENCES IN DELAWARE AgEcon
Duke, Joshua M.; Ilvento, Thomas W.; Hyde, Rhonda A..
Public preferences for nonmarket services of preserved land in Delaware are measured using two survey techniques. The results of a conjoint experiment, using a sample of 199 Delawareans, suggest that the environmental and agricultural attributes of preserved land are most important to the residents. The conjoint results also suggest that these services are of substantial value to Delawareans; at the margin, at least, agricultural and environmental preserved land provide net benefits to the public. The analytic hierarchy process is used to assess separate survey results from 129 Delawareans. The results provide specific weights on the relative importance of attributes and qualities of preserved land, which in large part replicate and reinforce the results...

Valoracion de activos ambientales mediante metodos multicriterio. Aplicacion a la valoracion del Parque Natural del Alto Tajo AgEcon
Bellver, Jeronimo Aznar; Guitart, Vicente Estruch.
The valuation of these goods can be a relevant element for the conservation and improvement, though the intangible and inmaterial aspects of environmental asseets difficult the utilisation of the traditional methods of valuation. This work presents a methodology for the valuation of those assets combining multi-criteria methods, the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the Goal Programming and traditional method the Discounted Cash Flows. The combinatio of both techniques allows extracting and indicator of the Total Economic Value (TEV) of an environmental asset, as well as of each partial value which make up the TEV, including tangible and intangible elements. The proposed methodology is applied to the valuation of the Alto Tajo Natural Park RESUMEN Calcular...
